From family reunions to barkada nights, Pusoy has always been part of Filipino culture. Now play it anytime, anywhere — against real players, for real prizes.
What Is Pusoy?
If you're Filipino, chances are you already know how to play Pusoy. It's the kind of game that shows up at every occasion — birthday parties, fiestas, long weekends, late nights with friends. You've probably watched your titos play it for hours on the dining table, and sooner or later, someone pulled up a chair and taught you how to read the hands.
Pusoy is a four-player card game using a standard 52-card deck. Each player is dealt 13 cards and has to arrange them into three groups: a front hand of 3 cards, a middle hand of 5 cards, and a back hand of 5 cards. The challenge is that each group must be arranged in a specific way — your back hand must be the strongest, followed by the middle, then the front. Getting that order wrong is an automatic loss.
At jiliphnow, we've brought this beloved game online so you can play with real opponents from all over the Philippines, any time of the day. Same rules you grew up with, same excitement, same bragging rights — now available right on your phone.
Know Your Cards
Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned player, this is the hand ranking order used in Pusoy at jiliphnow. Memorize these and you're already ahead of most players.
No matching cards. The hand value is determined by the single highest card. Common in your front hand setup.
Two cards of the same rank. One of the most common hands in the game. Higher pair beats a lower pair.
Two different pairs in the same hand. The higher top pair wins in a tie. Solid middle or back hand material.
Three cards of the same rank. In the front hand (3 cards), this is the strongest possible arrangement.
Five consecutive cards of any suit. The highest card in the sequence determines which straight wins against another.
Five cards all of the same suit, not in sequence. Beats a straight. Suit strength is ♦ < ♣ < ♥ < ♠ in tiebreaks.
Three of a kind plus a pair. The three-of-a-kind part determines the winner when two full houses are compared.
Four cards of the same rank. Extremely powerful — landing this in your back hand almost guarantees a point.
Five consecutive cards all in the same suit. The rarest and most powerful hand in Pusoy. Get this and you win that hand for sure.
Game Modes
Not all Pusoy games are the same. Different regions of the Philippines play with slightly different house rules, and jiliphnow carries all the main versions so you can pick the one you're most comfortable with.
This is probably the most popular version among younger Filipino players. It's a shedding-type card game where the goal is to be the first to get rid of all your cards. You play single cards, pairs, three-of-a-kinds, or five-card combinations in turn order, and each play must beat the previous one.
The "2" card (dos) is the highest-value card in the game — that's where the name comes from. Getting stuck with the 2 of spades when the game ends can cost you extra points.
The original version. Four players each receive 13 cards and arrange them into three hands — a 3-card front, a 5-card middle, and a 5-card back. Each hand is compared individually against all opponents. Win more hands, earn more points.
This version rewards careful thinking and good memory. You need to balance your hands wisely — making one hand too strong can leave the others exposed. A great choice if you prefer strategy over speed.
For players who don't want to wait around. Speed Pusoy trims down the thinking time per turn and uses a timed format so rounds stay crisp and fast. If you don't act within the time limit, your turn passes automatically.
This variant is popular with players who prefer high-frequency sessions — lots of rounds, lots of action, minimal downtime. Perfect for quick games during a break or a commute.
Win More
Luck plays a role, but the best Pusoy players win consistently because they think ahead. Here are some practical tips whether you're new to online Pusoy or just looking to sharpen your game at jiliphnow.
Always build your back hand first. This is your strongest 5-card group, so prioritize it. A full house or better in the back means you're already working with a solid foundation for the other two hands.
A common beginner mistake is dumping all the good cards into one hand and leaving the others with nothing. Your middle hand needs to beat your front hand — so manage the balance carefully or you'll get a mis-set penalty.
In Pusoy Dos, watching which cards have been played already tells you a lot. If three 2s have been dropped, the player with the 2 of spades doesn't have an automatic trump card anymore. Use that information.
Before jumping into higher-stakes tables at jiliphnow, spend time on the lower buy-in games. Get comfortable with the online interface, understand the timing, and develop a feel for how other players tend to set their hands.
Bad hands happen. The difference between a good player and a great one is knowing how to minimize damage from a weak deal rather than throwing it all away trying to force a win.
Background & Culture
Pusoy's roots trace back to Chinese card games, specifically a variant called Chinese Poker, which spread throughout Southeast Asia and took hold strongly in the Philippines. Over generations, Filipino players adapted and modified the rules until Pusoy became its own thing — something distinctly Pinoy in the way it's played, the language used at the table, and the culture around it.
The game became especially popular in the 1980s and 1990s, when family card nights were a staple of Filipino home life. Long before smartphones and streaming, Pusoy was the entertainment. A deck of cards, a fan or aircon if you were lucky, and a table full of titas and titos who took their hands very seriously. The ribbing, the bluffing, the dramatic reveals — all part of the experience.
That culture didn't disappear. It adapted. Now platforms like jiliphnow carry it forward into the digital space, letting players enjoy the same game with people from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao without anyone needing to travel anywhere.
The core experience is the same — you still need to read cards, think about hand rankings, manage your 13 tiles, and try to outplay three opponents. What changes is the pace and the convenience.
Online Pusoy at jiliphnow moves faster because there's no shuffling, no dealing by hand, and no waiting for someone to sort their cards. The platform handles all of that instantly. You get your cards, you have your time, and you set your hands. It's cleaner and more efficient, which actually lets you play more rounds in the same amount of time.
The social element shifts a little — you don't have the same banter as a face-to-face game, but many players find the online format less intimidating, especially if you're newer to the game. You can take your time without feeling the pressure of everyone staring at you across the table.
At jiliphnow, Pusoy isn't just an afterthought tacked onto a larger game catalog. It's a game we've built specifically for the Filipino market, with rules that match the local variants most Pinoy players are already familiar with. We don't impose foreign poker rules on a Filipino card tradition — the game is set up the way you already know it.
Tables are available around the clock, so whether it's Saturday afternoon or two in the morning on a Tuesday, you can always find opponents. The matchmaking pairs you with players at similar experience and stake levels, so you're not being thrown to the sharks when you're just starting out.
Cash tables at jiliphnow start at very affordable buy-ins — as low as ₱20 — which means you can enjoy the competitive aspect without putting your grocery budget at risk. For players who want to go bigger, higher-stake tables are also available once you've built your bankroll and your confidence.
We want every Pusoy session at jiliphnow to stay fun. Card games with money on the line can be exciting, but they can also be a slippery slope if you're not careful. Set yourself a session budget before you start, stick to it, and never chase losses. The tables will always be there — there's no need to force it on a bad night. If you feel like things are getting out of hand, jiliphnow has responsible gaming tools including session limits and self-exclusion options. No judgment, just support.
